Founded in the 1920s, The Northern Imperial Football League was formed with six teams, each a club part of a college. After a few years the sport gained immense popularity and the clubs became independent organizations except for Wellington, which to this day is still "owned" by the college. Since those first six teams, the league has grown immensely.Â
