The Republic is split up into 23 Kingdoms. A kingdom is a local region of government that runs a certain region of the republic. Each kingdom has a governor that runs the kingdom.
The kingdoms were established under the ruling of Emperor John shortly after the formation of the empire. He gave each member of the royal family and a few of his friends a kingdom to run so he may focus on running more of the national issues rather than working with Kingdom policies. Each Kingdom still has ties with their royal past but *most have turned the Kingdoms over to full democratic government. The few to still remain as “monarchy kingdoms" are Noelsburg, the Plains, Marmot, and both Perhsnippian Kingdoms. This means the original families that Emperor John chose to run the kingdom, still run them to this day.
At the fall of the empire, the new republican government dismantled the kingdoms to strip the republic of its royal past. However during the first term of the Williams administration, the district system was dismantled and the kingdoms were re-established as the main form of regional government. This was one of president Williams’ most popular moves of his first term, and played a vital role in his re-election in 2024.
Some issues are kept at a federal level, and some remain at the kingdom level. Most of the time if an issue is not written into federal law, then it is up to the kingdoms to write their own.
Unlike Kingdoms, colonies are land managed by the federal government and directly owned by the monarch. The Republic currently has eleven colonies, all islands near the republic. The colonies were acquired by the empire throughout imperial rule.
Each colony has their own culture and ways of life, and may seem very different. However the structure of government is all the same. All colonies are run by a governor, like the kingdoms, but since the monarch owns these islands, it is their royal right to appoint anyone of their choosing. However in the modern era, the monarch still appoints a governor, but also holds a referendum to see if their choice is adequate for the people of the colony.
The Republic also has two “Semi Independent Nations”, The Royal Governorship of Pershnippia, and The Royal Governorship of Southern Belcourt. A semi independent nation (in the context of the republic) is a nation that is fully inside of the realm of the republic and shares a head of state along with federal law, other than those two items, the nation is a fully independent state.
Although Southern Belcourt and Pershnippia have the same title and share the same ties with the republic, they still do not operate in the same way. Each of the nations have a different law making process.
Southern Belcourt is considered a “Fully Semi independent nation”. This means Southern Belcourt does not share any level of government with the federal government. All of their acts are passed in their own legislature, then signed by the president.
Pershnippia is a “Partly Semi Independent Nation”. This is due to Pershnippia having two kingdoms inside of its territory. This means since having kingdoms make up its territory, Pershnippia has representatives in the Council of Kingdoms.
For their acts to pass, they must travel through their legislature, then into the federal Council of Kingdoms, then onto the president. There have been talks to move Pershnippia to a Fully Semi Independent Nation like Southern Belcourt, but this would mean dismantling their two kingdoms, so the move has yet to be made.
